Physical copy ordered. I’ve told Sudana I want to read her in actual print and now here we are. She is a real gem.

"Mermaids can't live off of frozen chicken tikka masala alone" this is such a witty, heartfelt, and beautifully written piece about searching for real connection in a Trader Joe's of all places. How much of your grandmother's "mermaid theory" do you actually believe, and has that belief shaped the way you approach love today?

I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed it!

As for how much of her theory I believe— some days all of it. Probably would be most days if I wasn’t a stubborn NY’er. It’s shaped me greatly. There are a lot of moments I shy away from intimacy, whether it be a potential lover or a stranger I’ll never see again, and I’ll have to stop and remind myself my nana didn’t raise me to be any kind of coward.

That's beautiful "my nana didn't raise me to be any kind of coward." What a powerful mantra to carry with you. It makes so much sense that her mermaid theory shaped you, even on the days when NY stubbornness tries to win. Sounds like her spirit is still guiding you, whether you're hunting for love at Trader Joe's or just navigating life. also I have an idea for you can we chat

If I were 25 years younger, I’d fly to NY tomorrow. You and your mind make my still young fanboy heart go pitter patter. ❤️

I'm not sure if it's a European thing or not but the mermaid bit reminded me very much of when I was little and my mother tried to convince me that we were witches and that her father was the local witch doctor in their city in Soviet Ukraine.

Felicitations upon being published and finding at Trader Joe's an invitation to Torrisi's. Props to your grandmother for her determination and grit. Winston Churchill's multiply-married mother Jennie (born in Brooklyn, I will have you know) was still a social butterfly at age 66 when she slipped walking downstairs and broke an ankle. Gangrene set in, some of her leg was removed, and she died soon afterward. One might say she died "on the field of honor", never saying "die" until she died. An inspiration to mermaids everywhere. Anybody can eat a meal at Torrisi's, but not everyone can get a piece of writing published. The trifecta would be a proposal on your first date. Don't be like Julie Delpie and say "He should have proposed, although of course I would have turned him down." The BIGGEST Greek wedding is in your future if I read the tea leaves aright.--Jim
